Evaluation of Outlet Temperatures in a Shell-and-Spiral Heat Exchanger
Context and objectives
For EXXONMOBIL, ET2I designed a spiral coil heat exchanger installed inside a shell. Steam at 220°C circulates in the shell while oil flows through the internal coils. The objective is to assess thermal performance and determine the outlet temperatures of both fluids using CFD simulation.
The study was carried out using fluidyn-MP, a CFD software capable of simulating complex fluid flows, heat transfer, and transient or steady-state conditions on structured and unstructured meshes. The objectives were to :
- Analyze flow behavior inside the shell
- Determine outlet temperatures of steam and oil
- Assess heat transfer efficiency of the spiral coil configuration
